• Excellent Solubilizer: Glycols have been used in cosmetics and personal care products to impart beneficialproperties such as humectancy, solvency, moisturization and emulsification.One suchingredient is 1,3-propanediol (PDO).
• Carrier for actives: Mainly the facilitating effect could be ascribed to a change in the nature of the skin barrier. It appeared that the estradiol flux from propylene glycol vehicles was unaffected by occlusion and smaller changes in the applied propylene glycol amount.
• Moisturization: 1,3-propanediol was more efficient than BG and PG in moisturising the skin throughout the entire four hour testing period. And 10% 1,3-PDO solution provides better skin moisturisation during the initial application, but the solution containing 5% 1,3-PDO/5% glycerin has the best overall moisturisation effect.
• Sensorial Enhancer: Formulating with 1,3-propanediol /glycerin mixture may reduce the tackiness effect resulting from a higher concentration of glycerin alone.
• Reduced skin Irritation: 1,3-propanediol was shown not to be a skin irritant, fatiguing agent or sensitising agent, and has low potential to irritate and sensitise human skin.
• Boost Preservative Efficacy: Propanediol is increasingly added to formulations or used directly as extraction solvents especially in the case of natural extracts, as a texturizing agent or humectant but also for stabilization and preservation urposes. Kerdudo et al. demonstrated that propylene glycol and propanediol have preservative properties.
