Functions
- Free proline (Pro) is an important metabolic substance during the development of male organs and pollen germination in crops. The significant increase in Pro in pollen before flowering may be a material accumulation for pollen germination.
- Proline treatment under drought conditions can promote the growth of cutting seedlings. Proline can enhance the osmotic regulation ability and antioxidant enzyme activity of seedlings under low temperature stress, maintain the stability of cell membranes, alleviate their growth inhibition, and thus improve cold resistance.
- Exogenous proline promotes crop growth, root morphogenesis, biomass accumulation, and chlorophyll content under salt stress. It reduces the excess excitation energy of leaf PSII through heat dissipation, reduces the excitation pressure of reaction centers, promotes the performance of PSII, enhances the activity and photosynthesis of unit cross-section PSII reaction centers, and thus alleviates crop growth under salt stress.
